Criticism
Ever since the invention of metallurgy, instinctive artists have passionately wanted to master the apparently unruly materials of iron, steel, aluminum, and copper in order to express a new vision in space. First it was with fire, then with the help of technology, by bending and soldering. Even the industry is starting to reuse scraps or other bits of rubbish abandoned in the smelter, but contemporary creators relish in religiously collecting these discards. In light of big names and uncontestable talents in this particular sculptural domain, Laurent MUSTEL has proven a true revelation by combining fruits of his imagination with the technical possibilities of his profession. And with a few scraps, either used or destined to be destroyed, he proposes an original way of envisaging space, by creating works of art whose contemporary appearance arises from the profession, which finds itself transcended by the strangeness of an incontestably elegant vision, not only as a result of the natural nobility of the metals but also the precision of the hammering and the alchemy of their fusion. Therefore, through the expression of his art, Laurent MUSTEL fuses beauty, rigour and humour with his surprising flare, in a bold display full of striking creativity that is constantly being enriched.
