Criticism

Even for an artist gifted with the best intentions and talent, hyperrealism is not something that can be improvised. What’s more, but I may be mistaken: it cannot be learnt in the academic sense of the word. It has to be a mysterious gene that is implanted on the chromosome by chance, and in its absence, even hours of study in the most in depth and most polished schools will make very little improvement to a coarse or uncontrollable trait. One can improve it, I’ve certainly often noticed this, but reaching the standard that we have a right to expect from a virtuous effect of trompe l’oeil, requires a whole world of meticulousness, analysis and respect. It was in this vein that precociously gifted Jean-Pierre Chagniaud, after a long life of commitment to his work, took up his brush again. He then purposely chose to use dry pastels following a visit to the Pastel Exhibition in Brittany in order to create astounding works. The most banal of compositions depicting habitual and well-worn objects are revealed with astonishing panache, thereby confirming, through their appeal, the attraction that each of us has for exploring reality when transcended by the reflection, technique and talent of an artist. And this artist’s multiple awards and prizes pleasantly and indisputably overturn many of the renowned prize-lists.
