Criticism
Ever since painting became an art, portraiture has naturally emerged as a major genre in this discipline. It has nevertheless evolved down the centuries due to both the talent of creators and the determination of experimenters. From the pose of attractive models to the self-portrait in which the artist appears as an enraged assassin, this specialty has been tackled by diverse schools. While having undergone daring innovations, it is still going strong today thanks to the constant brilliance of willful and infinitely gifted painters who, with panache, continue the chromatic audacity that was sparked by Jacques-Emile Blanche and Marcel Duchamp. For me, Ingrid Michel from Caen has all the appearance of wanting to reform the tradition in turn. While having been trained at evening classes at the Caen School of Fine Arts and the Atelier Ecuyère, she flouts classicism in order to express her true personality in the footsteps of the “Fauves”. Without affecting the good and true likeness that her work bears to her subjects, she unleashes her imagination and, with an assertive hand and through the ferocity of pure colours and bold contrasts, annihilates the usual habits and customs. Light and shadow no longer play a structuring role, but have a dynamic function that draws the onlooker’s attention, leaving him surprised and fascinated by this intense and unusual work.
