Criticism
After studying at the Ecole supérieure des Arts Appliqués (Higher School of Applied Arts) in Paris, Catherine Chantalou moved to Le Havre in 1977. There, an exemplary teacher, she mastered academic drawing at the fine arts school in Porte Océane, thereby acquiring a solid and veritable experience, culminating with clay sculpture in 2002. I have always insisted that a good sculptor is first and foremost an excellent drawer. And Catherine Chantalou plainly proves this through her works that are happily welcomed in several Salons, associations and galleries in Normandy, and have won the artist remarkable awards.
Astonishing for their realism, harmony and life, her statues capture the light in an altogether magical way. All these bodies and faces reflect a rare vitality, so that every pose and every muscle under the patina quivers with a sensual beauty, the anatomic perfection of which both delighting and convincing us of the artist’s talent.
Here are works that express energy, love and tenderness. And the fine craftsmanship, characterised by sensitivity and perspicacity, proves just how many of these admirable women sculptors there are in this day and age. Flouting fashions, beauty and emotion are portrayed with a timeless elegance that only the model’s body can convey and preserve.
