Criticism

We are privileged in Normandy: there are extraordinary wood sculptors of all styles, and Dominique Bachelet easily belongs to the cohort of valourous artists who love the grain and the handling of undoubtedly rustic but extremely resplendent varieties of wood. This self-taught artist from Amfreville-la-Campagne in Eure has, with his natural and imaginative talent, enthralled observers at many a salon in Upper Normandy, harvesting distinctions without difficulty. In a decade and a half, he has revealed the almost carnal definition of his motifs, softening their innate rigour without losing an ounce of their evocative power. An excellent drawer and portrait artist, Dominique Bachelet possesses within him the perception of his chosen subject in space, going from the most seductive and sensual walnut bust with its fascinating grains, to the contemporary emanation of a long-standing and universal artform where sensations and imagination reign supreme. Here is a surprising artist who is respectful of what is real when he chooses, but who is also a pure seducer, creating works that are convincing in their originality, and beautifully finished, from the delicate and lustre effects on the surface right down to the extreme smoothness of the enveloping curves.
