Criticism

An author and artist at heart, Joël Gendreau has dedicated himself since the beginning of this century to drawing, watercolour painting, ink wash drawing, and stone engraving. Such specialisms leave no room for approximation and brilliantly single out this Breton artist on account of his skill and the infinite expression demonstrated in his works. What richness Joël Gendreau is able to offer through his graphites, washes and engravings! He reveals a rare and powerful determination to elevate a welcome sobriety within his authentic motifs, the richness of which stems from the contact of the diamond tip with stone or marble. Alternatively, a thick and inviting sheet of paper stands ready to convey the effect of monochrome, camaieus or sober yet efficient watercolour blends. Yet let us not forget his excellent portraits, landscapes, and granite-engraved bestiary. These finely created pieces perpetuate the memory and homage to their subject, whilst also reflecting the artist’s sensitivity for elegance and atmosphere.
