Criticism

Even very young, Thierry Lopez realised that his destiny lay in chalk drawing. As early as 1971, he took lessons from the excellent artist and pedagogue Henri Sergent at the School of Beaux Arts in Rouen, before joining the school with its ensemble of exceptionally talented teachers full-time. Although he then became a sign painter, Thierry Lopez remained passionate about the Fine Arts, and recently, with the support of his brother Gérard, who sadly is now deceased, he decided to reveal the fruit of his work to others. He participated first in the “Salon des Indépendants Normands” where his brilliance was noticed and rewarded, and then in numerous regional salons and exhibitions, obtaining appraisals and distinctions thanks to his perfect mastery of pastels, the result of which has earned him the title of guest of honour. However, Thierry Lopez did not take the easy option when he devoted his works to pure figuration. Yet his undeniable sensitivity is able to metamorphose reality, and he often compliments it with energy and a personal meaning where audacity and fantasy combine to produce original creations full of ardour. His pure and quivering pastel strokes bring reflections from his imagination to life in a host of expressive motifs. This does not prevent Thierry Lopez from sometimes scrupulously producing astonishing displays of hyperrealism, where the pastel’s satiny appeal successfully meets the meticulous and highly noteworthy effects of light and shadow.
