Criticism
Daniel Bergès has been passionate about painting his whole life, even while practicing the profession of technical drawing; a job which gave him an excellent base of rigour and balance. As retirement approached, the painting virus became powerfully evident, and following some fruitful artistic encounters and workshops, first in association with Guy Gicquel, then lessons with Jean-Pierre Rault, and recently summer workshops with Daniel Guilbert, Daniel Bergès discovered all the resources of watercolour painting. It is a difficult technique for those wishing to exploit all its possibilities; there is no turning back or regret. The originality of his dormant talent was thereby unleashed, and this allowed him to participate in a fair number of local exhibitions where prizes and awards confirmed the validity of his passion.
And this artistic choice is all the more praiseworthy when you know how difficult it is to produce a quality watercolour painting, and the artist has overcome this obstacle brilliantly and efficiently. Daniel Bergès bends the realist path he follows to fit his personality by analysing shapes, matter and light with a power that is rare for this discipline. The way in which he picturesquely treats the essence of his subjects generates an expressive style that is captivating in its atmosphere and movement. It is this that strengthens the natural fluidity of the watercolours, which are applied with an effective brushstroke that is in turn mindful of capturing the nuances and spontaneity of the original drawing.
