Why would a celebrated Parisian painter succumb to the charms of Varengeville-sur-Mer in Normandy? Just ask Patrick Waravka who, in 1984, could not resist the spaciousness and rare sensations of this exceptional place, one that has attracted and still remains home to so many great artists! There is a magic quality to the light which Waravka has made his own, and he devotes pleasure and energy into presenting his seascapes and floral impressions as perfectly unique narratives of movement and colour. He complements this with a technical mastery that is rich in emotions and convincing appeal. His seascapes depicting the serene cliffs of the Pays de Caux region are a case in point. The apparent calm within exudes a power that is symbolised in sweeping waves, while the brilliance and unity of colours emphasise their captivating mystery and energy. All the while, a limpid light shines omnipresent, even in a skilfully wrought leaden sky! As for his floral compositions, Waravka brings them to life with magical and quivering brushstrokes and a carefully selected spectrum of colours. The overlying smooth and dazzling rhythm idealises nature, one which is suggested in precise strokes that recreate a precious impression, transcend the appeal exuded by the flowers, and artfully blur reality. The result better expresses the power of poetic nuances and light through astonishing effects of harmony. Patrick Waravka translates certain of his oil paintings into truly successful prints and faithfully produces them as impressively beautiful Aubusson tapestries. And that is not forgetting the sensitivity with which the artist creates sacred art in monochromes of intensely evocative colours.
