Criticism
Vincent Kressmann trained at the Ecole Boulle and in his father’s cabinet-making and decorating studio. Thanks to his know-how and passion, Vincent Kressmann was admitted to the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris to study sculpture. After having worked in the studios of German sculptor Otto Waldemar and designer Wolfgang Schmitz, where he was able to practice etching, he decided to move back to Paris. Fascinated by the relationship between the two-dimensional image and volume, he studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts on the theme of “Sculpture in Public Spaces” with Gérard Singer, then at the Ecole des Arts Décoratifs, majoring in “Art and Space”. He then decided to devote himself entirely to sculpting and moved to Bourgogne. Since 2008, he has lived and worked in Normandy’s wooded bocage country near Valognes. It is there that the artist and wood enthusiast succeeds in transforming this living material into absolutely astonishing sculptures. He exhibits regularly in France and Europe.
Vincent Kressmann’s abstract sculptures are directly inspired from nature and particularly the beauty of his much-loved surrounding bocage, which allows him to go back to the grassroots in “search of what lies at the bottom of things.” The spiritual dialogue that he installs with his material, whether it be oak or lime, acquires full meaning in his work: “The wood is the tree, and the tree is the link between earth and sky.” His use of direct carving creates a play of building blocks, one that is always enlivened by verticality to obtain the essence of the shapes which have sprung from the artist’s imagination. In a very personal style, Vincent Kressmann creates a harmonious world of timeless interwoven elements that is characterised by vitality and a deliberate monumentality. The expressionist treatment of surfaces is combined with colour to create subtle effects of light and shadow. His use of polychrome allows him to bring the artworks to life and to highlight them in the space in which they stand.
Vincent Kressmann’s innovative creation, which borrows from both poetry and spirituality, is an invitation to take a fresh look at the world.
