Criticism

During her studies at the École des Beaux-Arts, Brunehilde Lebresne confirmed her talent as a drawer, a skill that can be seen in her essentially linear, stylised sketches, which are as elegant as they are dynamic and remarkably proportioned. Later, in 2005, like all good graphic artists, Brunehilde felt the desire to discover the famous third dimension that is sculpture. Gradually, participations in numerous local exhibitions followed, and the originality of her creative work did not fail to appeal to and convince many visitors. It must be said that this artist made the wise, albeit enterprising choice to materialise her temperament by carving soapstone. This soft and crucial rock has always captivated sculptors, since the ancestral creation of the famous Grimaldi Venus. With this blue and superbly venous alabaster, Brunehilde Lebresne conveys a return to statuary roots by creating a whole cenacle of sensual and maternal shapes, ranging from the captivating and alluring features of suggestive Callipygian Venuses to the enveloping, tender and affectionate smoothness of maternal figurines with their reassuring curves. At times, her inspiration can merge with the strangeness inherent to African masks. Yet often, Brunehilde’s works emanate an air of modern surrealism that stems from that which is perennial, even while evoking, and this is to her credit, the pure beauty of the monumental shapes designed by Jean Arp or Marta Pan in times gone by.
